It’s Only Up From Here: Pastor Joe Adevai

Welcome to Episode 1 of The Upgrade Podcast with Pastor Joe Adevai—pastor of Grace Church in North Brunswick, NJ—and the start of a new conversation built around one simple promise: it’s only up from here.

In this premiere episode, Pastor Joe introduces the vision behind The Upgrade: growth, progress, and becoming a better version of who you were created to be. He shares why the idea of “upgrade” matters to him personally—because he knows what it’s like to feel stuck, wasted, and beyond repair. Joe opens up about the first 27 years of his life: a broken family, living under a different name, poverty, crime, time in Rikers Island, drug dealing and addiction, and the night he was ready to end his life.

That’s where the story turns. Joe describes a 2 a.m. moment when he picked up a Bible his brother had given him, opened to the Gospel of John, and felt seen—fully and unmistakably. What followed wasn’t a polished, instant transformation, but the beginning of a real process: learning to bring what was hidden into the light, confronting shame, and eventually walking away from cocaine for good after a turning-point encounter with God’s love.

Along the way, Joe shares the bigger “why” of this podcast: he believes your calling is often connected to what bothers you most, the thing that moves you deeply with compassion—and that God designs people to solve problems and serve others. He also previews what’s ahead: conversations about faith and real life, practical wisdom, purpose, mentorship, financial stewardship, and guests from ministry, business, and beyond.

If you’ve hit rock bottom, feel trapped by your past, or you’re carrying a quiet hope that things can change—this episode is for you. Pastor Joe’s message is clear: a glimmer of hope can change everything—and with God, your best is still ahead.
