We Survived a Cult: John & Susan Bevilacqua

This episode of The Upgrade Podcast is a gripping, decades-spanning testimony of faith, distortion, courage, and restoration.

Pastor Joe and Alicia are joined by Pastor John and his wife Susan — close friends, ministry partners, and survivors of a highly controlling religious movement that began in the radical “Jesus People” era of the 1970s.

Susan shares her traumatic teenage years — including sexual assault, secrecy, and deep shame — and how a dramatic conversion to Christ felt like finding the missing piece of her life. John recounts his wild youth of drugs, music, near-fatal accidents, and depression before a radical encounter with Jesus at 3 a.m. changed everything overnight.

But what began as genuine revival slowly morphed into something darker.

They describe life inside what became the Church of Bible Understanding — communal living, surrendering income, strict leadership control, fear-based preaching, and an increasingly abusive leader. At one point, 1,500 members were ordered to converge on New York City overnight with nowhere to live. They slept in illegal lofts, endured public scandal, and lived under constant spiritual pressure.

Their view of God became distorted — performance-based, fear-driven, and rooted in guilt. Yet even in the confusion, they never lost their hunger for the real Jesus.

After nearly a decade, one pivotal meeting — filled with condemnation and threats of hell — broke the spell. They left. Within a month, they were married. Susan describes standing at the altar feeling like she had just been released from prison.

From there, God began rebuilding their faith — not through control, but through community, grace, and healthy church life. They found spiritual family, rebuilt relationships with their own families, raised children, launched ministries, started businesses, pioneered a preschool, and became pillars of strength in their church.

This episode explores:

  • Surviving spiritual abuse without losing your faith

  • The danger of works-based Christianity

  • The power of real Christian community

  • Why some leave cults and leave God — and why they didn’t

  • Healing shame and rediscovering identity in Christ

  • The beauty of staying planted in God’s family

Their story is both sobering and hopeful. It reminds us that deception can happen, but so can deliverance. Fear can rule for a season, but grace wins in the end.

If you’ve ever questioned your faith, experienced church hurt, or wondered whether God can redeem lost years — this episode will speak to you.
